Litein High School Principal Mr. Richard Sang has been sent on compulsory leave, following a violent student riot that left parts of the institution in shambles .
The Deputy Principal, Mr. Chirchir, has since taken over as the center manager.
The Kericho County based institution was closed indefinitely after students went on a rampage on Sunday, September 22, setting several buildings on fire.
The destruction is estimated to have caused losses worth Ksh69 million.
During a visit to the school on Monday, October 27, 2025, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba ruled out any government funding for the school’s reconstruction.
Migosi maintained that parents must bear the cost of rebuilding since the damage resulted from student indiscipline.
“The government won’t spend taxpayers’ money to reconstruct schools destroyed because of indiscipline. That is a burden that falls on the parents,” said Ogamba.

However, CS Ogamba pledged limited government support to help construct a perimeter wall around the school, citing the need to enhance security and prevent external interference from the nearby Litein town.
The unrest left dormitories and classrooms burnt, forcing the evacuation and temporary relocation of hundreds of students. Investigations into the cause of the riot are still underway, with some students and staff expected to record statements with authorities.
Earlier, Kericho high court had stepped in to mediate a dispute between parents and the school’s administration over reconstruction costs.
The court slashed the amount each parent was required to pay from Ksh49,000 to Ksh10,000, terming the earlier directive as unreasonable.
The court also directed both the school administration and the parents’ association to file final submissions by November 21, 2025, ahead of a final ruling.
Lawyers representing the parents urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to investigate the school’s management, citing alleged mismanagement and a pattern of student unrest.
In his ruling, Justice Joseph Sergon further ordered that KCSE candidates be allowed back to school upon paying a maximum of Ksh10,000 to cover part of the damages.
